Lake Huron USA 13 - 19 July 2027

One of the greatest ship graveyards in the world lies below the treacherous span of water in northwestern part of Lake Huron. In 19th century, veteran navigators regarded this section of Lake as one of the most dangerous stretches of Great Lakes. Sailors called this long, narrow strip of water Shipwreck Alley. In the late 1879, Presque Isle’s lighthouse keeper observed more than 8000 ships passing the Shipwreck Alley. According to New York Times every 24 hours a fleet of 100 vessels passed up. As wooden schooners and steamers increased in size and speed, the number of collisions became a nightmare for seamen and marine insurance companies. Boat collision was a major cause for the loss of property and life on the Great Lakes. More ships have met their demise on Lake Huron than any of the Great Lakes. Historic records indicate that over 200 ships have wrecked in waters around Presque Isle, 100 of which have been located and identified.

As result Shipwreck Alley provides some of the most exciting wreck diving in the world.
In July we are headed to Prisque Isle to explore some of the most famous wrecks of Lake Huron.

On our list are schooners and steamers sank at the end of 19th century. Cornelia B. Windiate, Typo, Defiance, Kyle Spangler, S.S. Florida, S.S. Norman.
As the wrecks lie in deeper water and therefore beyond the reach of recreational diving, they are in an absolutely fantastic state of preservation with all the kinds of detail a keen wreck diver dreams of.

Our 8 day program includes full 7 diving days, 1 long dive (up to 150 minutes runtime) or 2 shorter dives of 80 minutes. Our group will only include CCR divers, which make logistics and gas filling less o

Water temperature: You can expect 4-5°C at depth and 18-19°C in shallow water, above 20m with termocline in 20 meters. These conditions allow for a 60 - 70 minutes bottom time followed by 70 - 80 minute decompression obligation. Since decompression takes place in relatively warm water, P-valve and heating system are recommended, but necessary.

Accommodation: We will be sharing vacation houses located in close proximity of Presque Isle harbour. 3-4 divers will share a house, each having his own bedroom.

Logistics: Detroit international airport is the closest airport. Renting car right at the airport and driving 4h 30min up to Presque Isle, Michigan is the best option.
